is over. but first this here. new information just in to us at cnn. two iranian fighter jets fired at an unarmed u.s. predator drone. we're hearing it happened last week. barbara starr is at the pentagon for us with this exclusive report. barbara, tell us what you know. >> reporter: new military tensions now with iran. cnn has learned it was last thursday just one week ago that two iranian su-25, old russian fighter jets they operate flew out in to the persian gulf in to international air space and fired on a u.s. air force predator drone, an unmanned drone in international air space that the pentagon insists conducting routine all toe classified maritime surveillance. the iranian air force hit the drone. the drone was able to return to base in that region. but this does raise some serious new tensions with iran. it was, of course, just a few days before the presidential election. here in the united states. officials that we have talked to confirming it after we questioned them say they just don't know at this point what the iranians were up to. just out to cause trouble or trying

tomorrow. and with 35 days left, as john just reminded us, before we plunge down the fiscal cliff, two prominent republican senators, lindsey graham and saxby chambliss are signaling they are willing to give a break the no tax pledge. that is a hopeful sign, folks, because a new cnn/orc poll shows more than two thirds of americans believe a trip over that cliff would create major problems, perhaps even a crisis. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live from washington, d.c. this morning. nice to see you, paul. so the fiscal cliff triggers back-breaking tax hikes and massive spending cuts. you've got more numbers that show what type of budget plan americans actually prefer. >> exactly. one of the big arguments, zoraida, is should it be all spending cuts to get us there or tax increases, as well? brand-new numbers just out from cnn/orc. only about one in three say whatever deal should be struck should be just spending cuts. but almost seven in ten, two thirds of americans say the plan should include spending cuts and tax increases. our poll indicates americans are not so optimistic

to the numbers from dean mackey joining us from barclay's. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> any hair on the numbers, so to speak, as far as you can tell? >> i think this was a followed report when you look at the broad categories of job growth, when you look at the participation rate rise. the only underlying softness was in ourly earnings, but that really doesn't change the sfoer of where we've been. boug bottom line, the labor market has picked up some of the momentum after slowing down this summer. still a moderate recovery, though. >> yeah. the raining on expectationses w was 30,000 on one end. that beats even the top of the range. how could people have uniformly underestimated the number? >> the problem here is we're getting these upward revisions and so what happened last month the number was 114,000. that's been revised up significantly. if everyone would have known what that number actually was, we probably would have had higher numbers going into today's number. so it's just part of the game here, these upward revisions. >> look iing forward, dean, wit the hurricane and the
